  • Built at Mare Island Navy Yard, and commissioned 9 March 1931

  At the Battle of Rennell Island (south of Guadalcanal), 29-30 Jan 43: Chicago was struck by an aerial topedo, launched by a Betty flying from Rabaul. Taken under tow and bound for Espiritu Santo, Chicago was hit by four more Betty-launched torpedoes on the 30th and sunk.
