USS Justin (1898-1915)
USS Justin, a 1419-ton freighter and collier built in
Middlesbrough, England, in 1891 for commercial use, was purchased
by the Navy during the Spanish-American
War. Placed in commission in late April 1898, for the next
several months she carried coal for Navy units off the U.S. east
coast and in Cuban waters. Between October 1898 and February 1899,
Justin steamed around South America to Mare Island, California,
where she was decommissioned soon after arrival.
Recommissioned in September 1900, a short time later Justin
began the long voyage across the Pacific Ocean to begin seven
years' service in Far Eastern waters. Between 1907 and 1917 the
ship transported coal and supplies along the west coasts of North
and South America, supporting the operations of the Pacific Fleet.
USS Justin was placed out of commission for the last time
in December 1915, and subsequently sold.
