USS Dorothea, a 594-ton yacht built in 1897 at Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, was purchased by the Navy in May 1898 for Spanish-American War service. Commissioned at the beginning of June, she operated in the vicinity of the Florida Keys and Cuba during the remainder of the conflict. Dorothea was laid up in September 1898, remaining inactive at Norfolk, Virginia, and Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, during most of the next two years. In May 1901 she was loaned to the Illinois Naval Militia for training duty, an assignment that was switched to the Ohio Naval Militia in 1909.
In April 1917, soon after the U.S. entered World War I, Dorothea was placed in regular Navy commissioned service and, in July, returned to salt water. Sent to the Gulf of Mexico in August 1917, she operated out of Key West, Florida, and in the waters of Cuba, the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico until late May 1919. USS Dorothea was decommissioned in June 1919 and sold the following November.
