USS Benicia (1869-1884)
Originally named Algoma

USS Benicia, a 2400-ton steam sloop, was built by the Portsmouth Navy Yard, located at Kittery, Maine. She was launched in August 1868 under the name Algoma, but was renamed about a half-year before her December 1869 commissioning. The new warship soon voyaged to the Far East, where she remained until mid-1872. During this deployment, Benicia participated in the May-June 1871 expedition into Korean waters.

Late in 1872 Benicia joined the North Pacific Squadron and during the following three years cruised along the western coasts of Central America, Mexico, and the United States. She also ventured west to Hawaii and north to Alaska. In 1874 she carried the King of Hawaii and his party to San Francisco. USS Benicia was placed out of commission at the Mare Island Navy Yard, California in late November 1875. She was sold in May 1884.
