Aileen, a 192-ton yacht, was built at Chester, Pennsylvania, in 1896. She was purchased by the Navy in late April 1898 and converted to a gunboat at the New York Navy Yard. Commissioned as USS Aileen in mid-May, she served in a coastal defense role during the Spanish-American War. In May 1899 Aileen was assigned to the New York Naval Militia, with which she served as a training ship for over a decade. Her New York service ended in November 1909, and in 1910 she joined the Rhode Island Naval Militia.
When the United States entered World War I in April 1917, Aileen returned to regular Navy duties. She performed patrol and training missions along the southern shore of New England for the next two years. Decommissioned in July 1919, USS Aileen was sold in November 1920.
