Yamhill, a 6100 gross ton refrigerated cargo steamer, was built in 1918 at Oakland, California. Completed too late for use in World War I, she was inspected by the U.S. Navy in January 1919 and assigned the registry ID # 3806, but remained in civilian hands for nearly three more years. In November 1921 she was transferred to the Navy by the U.S. Shipping Board and placed in commission as USS Arctic (AF-7). She spent the rest of her active career as a Naval vessel and was sold for scrapping in 1947.
This page features our only view of the freighter Yamhill, which became USS Arctic (AF-7) in 1921.
