S.S. Texan (American Freighter, 1902).
Served in 1918-1919 as USS Texan (ID # 1354)
S.S. Texan, an 8615 gross ton freighter, was built at
Camden, New Jersey, in 1902 for the American-Hawaiian Steamship
Company. After nearly a decade and a half of merchant service,
she was acquired by the U.S. Navy in March 1918 and placed in
commission as USS Texan
(ID # 1354). During the rest of World War I, and the first
several months of the post-war era, she was employed as a cargo
ship and troop transport.
Decommissioned in August 1919, Texan soon resumed her commercial
career. She remained active in the American-Hawaiian fleet until sunk off Cuba by the German submarine U-126 on 11 March 1942. Nine of her officers and crew were lost with her.
This page features, and provides links to, all the views
