Stettin, a 480 gross ton iron screw steamship, was built at Sunderland, England, in 1861. On 24 May 1862 she was captured by USS Bienville while attempting to break through the Federal blockade of Charleston, South Carolina. She was purchased by the U.S. Navy in September 1862, placed in commission as USS Stettin in November, and sent back to the waters off Charleston to help enforce the blockade. While so assigned, she captured, or had a role in capturing or destroying, four would be blockade runners, including the steamers Aries (28 March 1863), St. John's (18 April 1863), Havelock (11 June 1863) and Diamond (23 September 1863). USS Stettin left the war zone late in the conflict and was decommissioned in early April 1865. Sold to commercial interests in June and renamed Sheridan, she was lost through stranding on 24 September 1866.
This page features the only view we have concerning the steamer Stettin, which served as USS Stettin in 1862-1865.
