Spartan (American Tug, 1912).
Served in 1917-1919 as USS Spartan (SP-336)

Spartan, a 226 gross ton tug, was built at Baltimore, Maryland, in 1912 for commercial employment. She was acquired by the Navy after the United States entered World War I and was commissioned in September 1917 as USS Spartan (SP-336). For the rest of the First World War, and for several months after the Armistice, the tug was used in the New York area as a minesweeper. She was returned to her owner in September 1919.

This page features our only view of the tug Spartan, which served as USS Spartan (SP-336) in 1917-1919.

Photographed prior to World War I.
This tug was acquired by the Navy on 27 April 1917 and commissioned as USS Spartan (SP-336) on 22 September 1917. She was returned to her owner on 20 September 1919.

The original print is in National Archives' Record Group 19-LCM.
