Mystery, a 71-foot motor pleasure boat, was built in 1917 at Stamford, Connecticut. Her design was similar to one prepared in 1916 by her builder, Luders Marine Construction Company, for a Navy Patrol Boat, and it is likely that her owner intended from the first to make her available to the Navy in the event the United States entered World War I. The Navy leased the craft in June 1917 and placed her in commission a month later as USS Mystery (SP-428). She operated out of Block Island during the rest of the First World War, patrolling the waters off Rhode Island and Connecticut. No longer needed after the fighting ended, Mystery was returned to her owner in January 1919.
This page features our only view of the motor boat Mystery, which served as USS Mystery (SP-428) in 1917-1919.
