Lake St. Regis (Cargo Ship, 1918).
Served as USS Lake St. Regis (ID # 4261) in 1918-19

Lake St. Regis, a 2238 gross ton steam cargo ship, was built in 1918 at Ashtabula, Ohio. Her original name, War Elfin, was changed to the United States Shipping Board's "Lake" series prior to completion. She operated in European waters by the U.S. Army for several months before October 1918, when she was acquired by the U.S. Navy and placed in commission at Cardiff, Wales, as USS Lake St. Regis (ID # 4261). The Naval Overseas Transportation Service first used her to carry coal between the United Kingdom and France. In February 1919, she was transferred to the U.S. Food Administration, and transported food from France to the Netherlands and Danzig. After steaming across the Atlantic to the United States, USS Lake St. Regis was decommissioned and returned to the U.S. Shipping Board in July 1919. She was sold for scrapping in 1926.

Lake St. Regis (U.S. Cargo Ship, 1918)

Photographed circa 1918. This ship was acquired by the Navy and commissioned on 17 October 1918 as USS Lake St. Regis (ID# 4261). Previously she had been one of many freighters operated under time charter in the European Theater by General Pershing's command. She was returned to the U.S. Shipping Board on 26 July 1919.

The original print is in National Archives' Record Group 19-LCM.
