Hobcaw, a 52' 6" motor boat, was built by L.B. Newman of Long Branch, New Jersey, in 1907. She was chartered by the Navy in August 1917 and placed in commission in September as USS Hobcaw (SP-252). The craft spent the rest of the First World War in South Carolina waters, initially on patrol service out of Charleston. At the beginning of August 1918 she began towing and passenger duty at the U.S. Marine Corps base at Paris Island, but a month and a half later returned to Charleston for repairs. Hobcaw was returned to her owner in mid-November 1918, a week after the World War I Armistice.
This page features the only view we have related to the motor boat Hobcaw, which served as USS Hobcaw (SP-252) in 1917-1918.
