Barge # 8 (American Barge, 1917).
Served in the U.S. Navy as Barge # 8 (ID # 2876) and Coal Barge # 430, circa 1918-1919

Barge # 8, a 500 gross ton wooden barge, was built at Norfolk, Virginia, in 1917. On 14 June 1918, while owned by the Hudson Transportation Co., of Norfolk, she was inspected by the Fifth Naval District for possible Navy service and assigned the registry ID # 2876. Barge # 8 was ordered taken over by the Navy later in that month, but appears to have been employed under charter instead. Renamed Coal Barge # 430 at some point in 1918-1919, by the beginning of October 1919 she was no longer in use by the Navy.

This page features our only view of Barge # 8, which was the U.S. Navy's Coal Barge # 430.
