Born in Charleston, South Carolina, John Pundt moved to New Orleans after his mechanical education. He joined the Confederate States Navy as a Third Assistant Engineer and served in CSS Sumter in 1861-62. In mid-1862, he became an engineer on CSS Alabama, remaining in her for her entire active career, which ended on 19 June 1864 when she was sunk by USS Kearsarge. He was captured in that action, but was paroled later. Following the Civil War, he was employed on merchant ships.
