Wesley Anthony Brown was born in Maryland on 3 April 1927. He attended Dunbar High School in the District of Columbia, and was appointed to the Naval Academy as a Midshipman in 1945. Four years later, he graduated as a member of the Class of 1949, the first African-American to complete a Naval Academy education. Wesley A. Brown then entered the Civil Engineering Corps, rising to Lieutenant Commander before he retired from the Navy in July 1969.
