Admiral Holmes relieved Admiral Moorer as Commander in Chief
of the 230,000-man Atlantic Fleet and the unified Atlantic Command.
In a separate ceremony, Holmes also took Moorer's NATO duty as
Supreme Allied Commander, Atlantic.
Admiral Moorer, the first officer ever to command both the Pacific
and Atlantic Fleets, goes to Washington, D.C., to take the Navy's
number one job, Chief of Naval Operations. Admiral Holmes comes
to the Atlantic Fleet from duty as Deputy Chief of Naval Operations
for Program Planning.
