S.S. Berwind
(American Freighter, 1893)

In port, probably in the New York City area, circa 1918, when the ship was inspected by the Third Naval District for possible acquisition by the U.S. Navy. Berwind is the ship in the background of this photograph. The steamer in the foreground is not identified.
Though apparently not taken over by the Navy, Berwind operated in European waters on U.S. Army account. She was torpedoed and sunk on 7 August 1918, while en route from Rochefort to Brest, France.
