Text of the original caption for this photograph:
Men of the 6th U.S. Marines ride up on the No. 2 Elevator on
the anti-sub aircraft carrier USS Tarawa - namesake of
the island the famous 6th Marines took 15 years ago - prior to
boarding troop helicopters of MAG-26 which will carry them ashore
during 1958 Atlantic Fleet Amphibious Exercises. These men have
been cruising on the Tarawa for the past five days under
conditions slightly different from those of the actual Tarawa
days. During the battle and landings, Marines waded waist deep
through the last hundred yards in water made red from the blood
of their comrades. Tarawa is now affectionately known
as TAH-RAH-WAH-BOOM-DE-AY. |
