BLOODY MEMORIES

MARINES PREPARE TO ATTACK AFTER LANDING ON TARAWA AGAIN

Men of the 6th U.S. Marines ride up on the No. 2 Elevator on the anti-sub aircraft carrier USS Tarawa - namesake of the island the famous 6th Marines took 15 years ago - prior to boarding troop helicopters of MAG-26 which will carry them ashore during 1958 Atlantic Fleet Amphibious Exercises. These men have been cruising on the Tarawa for the past five days under conditions slightly different from those of the actual Tarawa days. During the battle and landings, Marines waded waist deep through the last hundred yards in water made red from the blood of their comrades. Tarawa is now affectionately known as TAH-RAH-WAH-BOOM-DE-AY.

The 37,000 ton carrier is commanded by Captain C.K. Harper, USN.
