Captain Mildred McAfee Horton, USNR (Retired)


Receives the Key to the City from Charles B. Wheeler, Mayor of Kansas City, Missouri, during the 30th Anniversary National Convention of Navy Women, August 1972. She gave the convention's keynote address.
At that time, Captain Horton was a trustee of the University of New Hampshire. She was President of Wellesley College before and after World War II. When commissioned as the Navy's first female officer in August 1942, she became the Director of the Women's Reserve (WAVES) and served in that position until February 1946.
This photograph was originally released by the Naval Air Reserve Detachment, Olathe, Kansas, on 10 September 1972.
