Joint Chiefs of Staff (JCS)
Meeting with the Secretary of Defense at Ramey Air Force Base,
Puerto Rico, in April 1956. They dressed casually in accord with
President Dwight D. Eisenhower's directive that the Nation's
top military leadership periodically leave Washington, D.C.,
for informal meetings to discuss major defense issues.
Among those present are (clockwise, from left):
Admiral Arthur W. Radford, USN, JCS Chairman;
Charles E. Wilson, Secretary of Defense;
General Maxwell W. Taylor, Army Chief of Staff;
Admiral Arleigh A. Burke, Chief of Naval Operations;
General Randolph McC. Pate, Marine Corps Chief of Staff;
Colonel R. Phillips, Aide to Secretary Wilson.
The man with back to camera, in left center foreground, is not
identified, but is presumably the Air Force Chief of Staff.
Collection of Admiral Arleigh A. Burke, USN (Retired).
