"Passage of the Alabama by the Small Channel between the Islands of Canto, Running Away from the Kearsarge"

Photograph of an oil painting by Henry Abreu, presented by his father, Dr. Eduardo Abreu to Rear Admiral Charles S. Sperry, USN, at the time that the "Great White Fleet" passed through the Azores, 1 January 1909.
The painting depicts a reported incident involving CSS Alabama in the Azores, in about 1862.
The Naval Historical Foundation holds a portfolio of presentation photographic prints of this scene, each with an inscription mounted at the left. The original oil painting was in the Collections of the Navy Department in 1982, but was in relatively poor condition.
