Hand-colored contemporary engraving, depicting the ship laying a cable between the British Isles and North America, circa 1865-1866.
Note: This illustration shows Great Eastern with her original five smokestacks. However, when converted to a cable layer, her number four smokestack and its two boilers were removed to make space for cable stowage.
