He was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for heroism on board USS California (BB-44) during the 7 December 1941 Pearl Harbor attack. USS Herbert C. Jones (DE-137) was subsequently named in his honor. Official U.S. Navy Photograph, now in the collections of the National Archives.
